Whatever the merits of this week’s summit between President Biden and the Chinese president Xi Jinping, there was no reason for American business leaders to stumble over their own efforts to get in on the action. Yet there they were on Wednesday night, prostrating themselves before Xi at a dinner that was a propaganda coup for China and an embarrassment for its CEOs.
The dinner, for which ticket prices totaled $40,000, seems like quite the affair. Mr. Xi received a standing ovation for taking the stage before saying a word. He got more applause, from an audience that included Apple Tim Cook to executives of Qualcomm and boeing—for uttering such memorable platitudes as “there is much room for our cooperation” between the United States and China.
