Astronomers have discovered the heaviest pair of black holes ever seen: a duo weighing the equivalent of 28 billion suns. The combined mass of black holes is so large that they refuse to collide and merge.

The black hole binary, embedded within the “fossil” galaxy B2 0402+379, consists of two enormous supermassive black holes that circle each other just 24 light-years away, making them the black hole pair closest ever detected.
