Citizen of a species,” a dramedy about a woman who takes matters into her own hands after falling victim to a scam, delivered on its promise from a previous week of trailers. “Ciudadano” surpassed the South Korean box office in its first weekend, representing a market share of more than 40%. But with few new titles hitting theaters, total theatrical revenue was at its lowest level in several months.

“Citizen” earned $2.59 million between Friday and Sunday, according to figures from Kobis, the data service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). More than five days since its release on Wednesday, and with the addition of its previous trailers, “Citizen” finished its opening weekend with a cumulative $3.58 million.

Directed by Park Young-ju, “Citizen” tells the story of a woman whose business caught fire and takes out a sizeable loan in an attempt to restart it.
