Netflix One day brings to life David Nicholls Wonderful and overwhelming romantic novel. Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew’s orbit begins on July 15, 1988, the night of their graduation. In the years that follow, Emma and Dexter’s relationship ebbs and flows, but their paths continue to cross.

The roles of Emma and Dexter are crucial to the success of a One day adaptation. hollywood life spoke exclusively with executive producer and head writer nicole taylor about finding Emma and Dexter in Mod Ambika and Leo Woodall.

“We thought it was going to be an absolute nightmare and we knew this wouldn’t work unless the casting was brilliant and perfect. “We were very lucky,” Nicole said.

For Nicole, casting Emma was the most important aspect of fitting in. “I really saw that character and I feel like most British women identify with that character a lot,” Nicole explained. “I’m sure some men do too, but she means everything to me. I think she’s a brilliantly written female character, and that’s what made me want to adapt the book more than anything. So when Ambika walked into the room and embodied so many of the things that she hoped the character would be, it was a great joy.”

As for the charming Dexter, The white lotus The alum fit perfectly. Nicole admitted there was always a “deep inspiration” when Leo and Ambika were in the same frame. “I feel like Leo brings something quite new to the character of Dexter. He brings a kind of innate vulnerability and that was really interesting,” Nicole said.

Episode 12 is a turning point for Emma and Dexter’s relationship. Dexter visits Emma in Paris after her divorce from Sylvie. While Dexter wants to pick up right where he left off with Emma after her drunken hookup a year earlier, Emma is dating someone else. After almost an entire season of definitive slow burn, Dexter and Emma’s connection is alluded to but never shown. Nicole went back and forth on whether to show herself or not. that return point.

“It was certainly something I reflected on, and talked to myself about how crazy it is to not show the moment,” Nicole said. hollywood life. “I certainly didn’t feel limited by the format if I felt it was dramatically justified to show it. But it was dramatically much more interesting to not see that and see the aftermath and see Dex at the point where he’s just in love with her, but she’s very cautious. That’s a more interesting scene to me than two people getting drunk and hooking up. “I definitely questioned the decision, but I felt good about not showing it.”

For those who have read the novel, you will know that Dexter and Emma do not spend the rest of their lives together. Just a few years into their life as a couple, Emma is hit by a car and killed while she was taking a simple bike ride. Nicole revealed if there was ever a discussion to change Emma’s fate in the limited series.

“Of course,” he admitted. “It’s something I started thinking about and I felt like if we’re going to do this, I have to be confident. It just broke people’s hearts. I remember being on the subway and reaching that page in a book. You just want to throw the book out the window. It’s devastating. So it seemed right to question that choice again. But in the end, it seemed like the right choice for the adaptation because it belongs to that story.”

He continued: “The story has a dramatic structural integrity, and it’s about the kind of cosmic nature of these relationships that don’t make sense. This attraction towards someone with whom you apparently have nothing in common. But over time, you see something new and you see something in them. It is something ephemeral but also lasting. There was no other ending that so well captured the meaning of the overall piece, but I didn’t do it lightly. I spent more time on episode 14, which is the period afterward, than any other episode. I rewrote it a billion times. I was on set the whole time. There were a lot of inventions in episode 14 and that’s where I tried to help people realize it.”

The final episode begins after Emma’s death. Dexter is devastated by the sudden loss of the woman he always loved and is unsure how to move forward. While he is surrounded by Emma’s belongings, she appears to him. “It won’t always be like this,” Emma promises Dexter as her grief hangs over him like a nasty storm. Nicole explained why she decided to include this touching moment in the series.

“I think it would actually be irresponsible and somewhat reckless and quite nihilistic for that (Emma’s death) to just happen and then that’s it. You have to give it some kind of meaning,” she said.

Throughout the adaptation process One day For Netflix, Nicole noted that she worked “very closely” with David. “I felt like he was there as a sounding board for me,” Nicole said of her collaboration with the author. “He was just wonderful. To be honest, that was one of the highlights of the experience, working closely with him. He was a great force for good. It was the highlight of the experience. It might have been really intimidating to adapt a book that he’s already adapted, but no, he was very generous and understanding. I would say it was an integral part of the process.” One day now streaming on Netflix.
