How is my Social Security payment date determined?

The Social Security Administration typically sends payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month. The day you receive your check depends on your birthday.

  • If your birthday falls between the first and 10th of the month, your payment will be sent on the second Wednesday of the month.
  • If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month, your payment will be sent on the third Wednesday of the month.
  • If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month, your payment will be sent on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

What happens if I receive Social Security and SSI payments?

If you received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, the payment schedule is different. These payment dates change if the first or third day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For example, January 1 is a holiday, so SSI beneficiaries received their January payments a few days early, on December 29, and their Social Security payments will arrive on January 3.

What happens if my check does not arrive on the expected date?
