Spanish region of Catalonia offers women and girls free, reusable period products | Trending Viral hub


Barcelona, ​​Spain — The Spanish region of Catalonia this week launched a pioneering women’s health initiative that offers millions of women and girls reusable menstrual products for free.

Around 2.5 million women and girls in the northeast Spain You can receive a menstrual cup, a pair of period underwear, and two packs of cloth sanitary pads at local pharmacies for free.

The Catalan government said the initiative, which is called “My period, my rules,” aimed to “guarantee the right to menstrual equity.” The regional government cited statistics saying that 23% of women surveyed by Catalonia’s public opinion office said they had reused hygiene products designed for single use for economic reasons.

“For several decades, women’s sexual and reproductive rights have been at the center of the feminist struggle on a global scale,” said Tània Verge, regional advisor for Equality and Feminism of Catalonia. “This makes our country a fairer place.”

The distribution of reusable products also aims to reduce waste. The regional government states that Catalonia produces around 9,000 tons of waste from single-use feminine hygiene products.

Reusable products are purchased by the public health care which covers the entire population and is distributed among the more than 3,000 private pharmacies in Catalonia. The program cost the regional government 8.5 million euros ($9.2 million).

Spain’s national government passed a law last year giving women with debilitating menstrual pain the right to paid medical leave.

Spain is preparing for International Women’s Day on March 8, when the European country will hold some of the largest marches for women’s rights in the world.
