Last week, the Union Cabinet cleared a package of Rs 10,371.92 crore for the National AI Mission, primarily to fund private sector initiatives. Although well-intentioned, the fact is that the private sector is able to find the investments necessary to establish the IT infrastructure and develop the models and the market. What is needed is adequate policy support for an enabling environment for the AI ecosystem, in terms of regulation, legislation, customs and tax policy. Furthermore, since AI works on the basis of large amounts of data, there is an urgent need to fine-tune the processing and storage of personal and non-personal data as the sector grows.
