X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, named a new chief security officer to oversee content policies and rules amid changes to the platform that have raised concerns among advertisers.

The company promoted an internal employee, Kylie McRoberts, to take on the high-profile role. X also hired Yale Cohen, a former Publicis Media executive, and put him in charge of ensuring advertisers feel safe on the service.

“When we say that security and freedom of expression can and must coexist in X, we mean it. And the security team works tirelessly, day and night, around the world to make that happen,” CEO Linda Yaccarino said in a company-wide email seen by Bloomberg on Tuesday.

The company also announced the hires in a publication on the platform.

The Division of Confidence and Security of X, which supervises the type of content that appears on the site, has faced important challenges since Elon Musk bought the social media platform in October 2022. Musk, a self -denominated “absolutist of freedom of freedom of expression,” he said he wanted Twitter. to be a place where “a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy way.”

McRoberts will be the third trust and safety chief since Musk took over. The first, Yoel Roth, resigned just weeks after Musk took over the site and criticized the company for relaxing standards against misinformation and hate content. Last June, his successor Ella Irwin also resigned.

The company’s free speech policies have turned away advertisers who don’t want their ads to appear next to harmful content. Last November, some of X’s biggest advertisers, including Walt Disney Co. and Apple Inc., suspended their investments in the site after a report found their ads were next to pro-Nazi content. X’s advertising revenue was about $2.5 billion last year, a decline of about 50 percent, Bloomberg reported. That hasn’t stopped Musk from supporting content that some consider offensive. X is also testing online groups for “adult content” and other types of “not safe for work” material.
