Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been dealt a huge blow as their star spin bowling option Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The news was confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) CEO , Ashley de Silva.
“He will not participate in the IPL because he needs rehabilitation after visiting the podiatrist. He has a swelling in his heel and has been playing with injections. So he decided to solve this problem before the World Cup and informed us about his decision to skip the IPL this year,” de Silva told a local newspaper in Sri Lanka.
Why Hasaranga’s unavailability is bad news for Hyderabad?
Non-availability would be a big blow for the Hyderabad team, which only has Mayank Markande as an option.
Hasaranga suffered a left heel injury during Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh earlier this month. It’s bad news for SRH, especially given the multifaceted gameplay that Hasaranga brings to the equation. He could have made a real impact in the second half of the season when pitching was expected to slow down.
Not only as a bowler but also as a lower order batsman, he could have been equally important.
Money is not a factor behind Hasaranga being left out of IPL 2024
Hasaranga, who was paid Rs 10.75 million in the IPL 2022 auction, could only get Rs 1.5 million in the IPL 2024 auction. It was rumored that due to the huge difference in his price he was avoiding playing this season in the IPL and risked his body before the T20 World Cup.
However, those rumors were termed baseless by Hasaranga’s manager, who in a statement to Cricbuzz said, “We could have signed up for a base price of INR 2 crore if money was a factor. Also, fewer games means less money. He has to take care of “His ankle. He is also the captain of the national team.”
