The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is in the process of setting up 100 debris collection points in the national capital to mitigate pollution, officials said on Saturday.

While 35 of them are already operational in various areas, locations have been identified for another 49, the MCD said in a statement.

According to reports, construction activity is a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi.

“To address this issue, the MCD, in collaboration with plant concessionaires A-PAG and C&D (construction and demolition), has set up debris collection points across the Delhi region,” the statement said.

In the initial phase, the MCD carried out a pilot project in 10 districts of the western zone, establishing three exclusive collection sites. This initiative yielded “remarkable results,” showing a significant 46 percent reduction in illegal debris dumping, according to the release.

Expanding on this, the MCD is currently in the process of setting up around 100 collection points, officials said.

The initiative to establish more collection points across the city for effective management of construction and demolition waste is progressing rapidly, the MCD said.

The sites are equipped with safeguards such as 12-foot profiled sheets, sprinklers, anti-smog guns and LED signage panels to ensure responsible disposal, he said.

Citizens can throw up to 20 tons of waste each day in these places in each district. They can also contact the C&D plant concessionaire through a helpline for waste collection.

To ensure proper collection of debris and check its illegal dumping on roads, civic departments are “actively carrying out” citizen awareness activities and sensitization training of waste transporters on a regular basis, the MCD said.

To date, 400 training sessions have been carried out and nearly 100 waste collectors have been sensitized. The MCD is taking a “proactive approach to curb illegal dumping of debris by imposing fines on transporters who carry out unauthorized dumping on roadsides, manholes and other prohibited areas,” he added.

Citizens who engage in construction activities without implementing necessary safeguards or neglecting proper disposal of construction and demolition waste at the designated collection site may also be fined, the MCD said.

The respective deputy commissioners are reviewing the status of construction and demolition waste and collection sites in their areas on a fortnightly basis, he said.
