Israel is wasting its chance to restore sanity
Dartmouth, Mass.: Israel initially enjoyed the sympathy and outrage of a significant list of nations when Hamas inflicted a barbaric attack on Israeli citizens. But that sympathy quickly faded when Israel’s retaliation became disproportionately unwarranted, causing a divide not only between nations but also between political factions in the United States. Most damaging of all, Jews everywhere turned on each other and were the target of an anti-Semitism that may have been latent but was easily aroused.
There were loud cries for a ceasefire, even from devout allies. It came to the relief of millions of people directly and indirectly affected. The media again focused sympathetically on the freed hostages and much attention was paid to their treatment by Hamas. A slight change of opinion could be observed, which once again brought sympathy to Israel.
This was the perfect opportunity for Israel to change course, extract the remaining hostages, and declare victory by annihilating large concentrations of Hamas tunnels and command centers. But sadly, Israel’s leaders resumed bombing and vowed to fulfill their mission to completely destroy Hamas. This is an absolutely unattainable goal, as Hamas has legions of followers in other countries, and Palestinians who lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods and a habitable environment will now join Hamas and avenge the atrocities committed against them.
Millions of Israelis were undoubtedly relieved by the ceasefire and hoped for a new direction in policy towards Gaza and the West Bank. This was a missed opportunity that will reverberate for decades to come, with Israel likely to be isolated and contain the largest ghetto in Jewish history. Betty Ussach
Genocidal rhetoric
Cedarhurst, LI: Announcer Juan Montalvo regurgitates the old hoax that Israel is committing genocide, but then responds with the song “from the river to the sea,” which is a call for Israel’s destruction, i.e. genocide. Mr. Montalvo, it is better to remain silent and appear stupid than to speak and clear up all doubt. Adam Moskowitz
Zionist aggression
Bronx: To host Richard D. Wilkins: First, there are many Israelis protesting Israel’s murder of thousands of innocent civilians. Secondly, there is no peace because for 75 years the Zionists have been stealing land and oppressing the Palestinian people. I am Jewish and I have relatives who teach their children that the only good Arab is a dead Arab. Richie Nagan
Will of the people
Long Island City: Like the Daily News editorial board, I believe it was a mistake for the House of Representatives to expel George Santos (“Failure everywhere in Santos”, editorial, December 2). He is an unusually stupid person, but his corruption is average, compared to members of Congress. That he got elected is the fault of New York Democrats, who were apparently incapable of conducting even basic opposition research in 2022. The people of his district were in the best position to decide his political fate in the future. Lucas J. Cole
Clean house
East Meadow, LI: Now that George Santos has been expelled from the House, it’s time to expel Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan, Elise Stefanik and Paul Gosar. Don’t call it “draining the swamp.” Consider flushing the toilet. Richard Skibins
Following
Kew Gardens Hills: Congratulations to the House of Representatives for having the courage to expel “liar” George Santos. Too bad they didn’t have the courage to expel the terrorist, anti-Semitic and lying supporter Rashida Tlaib. She is 50 times more dangerous than Santos and I would prefer 10 of him to one of her. barry couple
Won’t be fooled again
Rockaway Point: I didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton because I thought her presidency would bring too much drama (oh, the irony!). I will no longer fall for Republican propaganda against the Democratic front-runner, President Biden. If Biden deserved impeachment, the evidence would already be known. Likewise, Donald Trump’s lawyers would show evidence that Trump is innocent of his many illegal actions. How do you justify treating Trump as if he is above reproach and the law? Patricia J Murphy
Direct action
Staten Island: To all those who are legitimately concerned about animal cruelty, I would suggest that a donation to the ASPCA would do far more to address the problem than writing letters about a comic strip. Ralph D’Esposito
rude comment
Brooklyn: To host Stephen Markbreit: Talent and wit don’t excuse Bramhall’s penchant for hurting people personally. And if we’re talking wit, you might want to check out Gary Larson, whose Daily News comic strip, featuring his brilliant commentary, came at no one’s expense. As for Trump, what’s the going price of eggs lately, $25? Ron Goldman
Unique issue
Brooklyn: For nearly half a century after the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973, Republicans asserted that abortion was not a federal matter and whether it was legal or not should be left to individual states. Now that Roe has been overturned, many Republicans are singing a different tune. They do not believe that women in pro-choice states like New York, California, Vermont and Illinois should have the legal right to terminate unwanted pregnancies. They are now demanding a federal ban on abortion in all 50 states and Washington, DC, and some extremists are calling for abortion to be banned even in cases of rape, incest, or a threat to the life of the pregnant girl or woman. Americans who believe in reproductive freedom should keep this in mind for next year’s elections. Dennis Middlebrooks
festive flop
Staten Island: I agree with announcer Thomas Sarc: I haven’t seen the tree lighting in many years. It used to be a half-hour show that has morphed, I think, into a two-hour production. Light the tree now! They torture you with entertainment and, not in vain, the tree looks the same every year regardless of the size! Lynn Fodor
call it what it is
Trumansburg, New York: I’m a new grandparent who is losing hope after decades of denying that fossil fuel use is causing our climate crisis and unnatural disasters. I ask you to do everything you can to stem the tide of misinformation about fossil fuels. To start, let’s stop using the phrase “natural gas.” The misinformation spread by multibillion-dollar fossil fuel companies has been so pervasive that we often participate in spreading these falsehoods without even realizing we are doing so. Rene Carver
No progress
Brooklyn: I wrote several letters that your newspaper did not publish about the wanton disregard for public safety in allowing bicycles and mopeds to do whatever they want in New York. Several weeks ago you published a wonderful editorial on the problem (“Step on the brake on electric bicycles”, November 12) that did not receive any response in La Voz del Pueblo. He hoped that finally, with a genuine Daily News editorial, something would be done about the vehicles on our sidewalks. It’s horrible not being able to take a walk safely. When will pedestrians become the “kings and queens” their editorial demanded, and when will our needs come before the food delivery apps terrorizing our city? Ed Temple
It’s time for a shakeup
Staten Island: Well, another NY Jets loss. What will it take for owner Woody Johnson to sell the team? I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: Woody, sell the team! You are so stubborn! Jeffrey Van Pelt
Supporting him
Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania: To announcer Joseph Napoleone: I know our countryman Tommy DeVito plays for the Giants, but being a countryman, I hope he makes a name for himself in the NFL. By the way, I lived most of my life in South Richmond Hill, near Lefferts Blvd. and Libertad Avenue. Jose Matarazzo
easy enough
Rutherford, New Jersey: Mayor Adams versus the FBI: “Show me the man and I’ll find the crime.” Famous quote by Lavrentiy Beria. Bruce South
