Since the film’s release, a conspiracy theory has persisted online that the film is somehow a warning about the widespread disorder to come.
This same thread came up at the end of last month when a AT&T network outage wreaked havoc on American cellular networks. “The predictive programming of the Obama movie (sic), Leave the world behind“It’s getting too real right now,” one user wrote in X. “I would not put it past our own federal government to institute a terrorist or cyber attack, only to blame foreign countries like China and Russia.”
Most likely, nothing like this has happened. Ultimately, reactions like these to Leave the world behind and Civil war they simply serve as proof that they are effective as works of fiction. They are not part of a psychological operation to placate the public; They are reactions to a political era that is tense at best. Convenience is not a prerequisite for good filmmaking; Movies are supposed to be disturbing sometimes.
